The vocative (vokativ) is the 5th grammatical case in Czech. It is used when we address someone directly — for example, when calling a person, greeting them, or speaking to them.

In English, names usually stay the same:

  • Hello, Peter!

  • Mom, where are you?

But in Czech, the name often changes form.

In Czech, instead of having question words, forms of Kdo? Co?, we say: oslovujeme, voláme (addressing sb by their name)
