Pozice si/se
If you are learning Czech, you have likely run into the little words se (oneself) and si (to/for oneself). While Czech sentence structure is generally flexible, these two words are notoriously picky. They follow a strict rule about where they belong in a sentence.
Once you learn the basic pattern, placing them correctly becomes second nature.
The Golden Rule: Position 2
The absolute most important rule is that se and si almost always sit in Position 2 of a sentence.
Position 2 does not mean the second word. It means right after the first complete thought or unit (constituent) of the sentence.
That first unit can be a single word, a long description, or a prepositional phrase:
Single word first:
Petr se směje. (Petr is laughing.)
Long phrase first:
Ten náš nový autoškola instruktor se směje. (That new driving instructor of ours is laughing.)
Prepositional phrase first:
V té malé restauraci si dám pivo. (In that small restaurant, I’ll have a beer.)
What Comes First in the Sentence?
Because Position 2 attaches to the first full unit, almost any single block of information can start your sentence:
A Subject or Name: Eva se dívá na televizi. (Eva is watching TV.)
A Verb: Dívám se na televizi. (I am watching TV.)
A Time or Place: Včera si koupil knihu. (Yesterday he bought himself a book.)
A Full Description: Tři mladí studenti si pronajali byt. (Three young students rented an apartment.)
Stacking Multiple Pronouns
When a sentence has several small helper words crammed into Position 2, they follow a strict line:
Past tense / Conditional helpers: (jsem, jsi, jsme, jste / bych, bys, by)
Reflexive words: (se, si)
Other pronouns: (mi, ti, mu, ho...)
Examples:
Už jsem si koupil auto. (I have already bought myself a car.)
Oni by se mi smáli. (They would laugh at me.)
The 2nd Person Shortcut (ses / sis)
In the past tense, when you combine "you" (jsi) with se or si, they blend together:
jsi + se = ses → Kdy ses vrátil? (When did you return?)
jsi + si = sis → Co sis koupil? (What did you buy yourself?)
